This calendar print is for the year 1788. The inscription in the middle reads ´Year 8 of Tenmei (1788), almanac of the earthmonkey (天明八歳戊申暦). The monkeys therefore reference to the cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The year of the monkey is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 申.
